CATARACT SURGERY

What is cataract?

Cataract is an eye disease that negatively affects the quality of life of the patient who has lost the transparency of the eye lens due to old age, diabetes, high blood pressure, high eye pressure, kidney diseases, intraocular inflammation, eye trauma and long term use of cortisone medication. Although cataracts are usually seen over the middle age, they are rarely seen congenitally in newborn babies. Congenital cataracts develop as a result of infections or medications of the mother during her pregnancy but they can also develop uninhibitedly. As a result of the cataract muddling in the eye lid forms, people have a vision of looking behind a foggy glass due to this condition. Cataract is not an eye disease that can be treated with medication or glasses, surgery is the only option.

Cataract Symptoms

Cataracts are characterized by blurred vision, diminished vividness of color, and reduced visual quality in people around the average age of 55-60 years. Cataract patients say they see the colors more in pastel tones. Symptoms that can be seen in cataract patients include increased sensitivity to light, difficulty in driving, night vision reduction, double vision, frequently changing or cleaning eyeglasses. Even if cataract patients use glasses, they cannot see far and near well, and they think it is a problem caused by glasses.

Cataract Diagnosis Methods

The cataract diagnosis is made as a result of a detailed examination by the eye doctor. Diagnostic methods such as visual acuity test, enlargement of the pupil, and biomicroscopic examination are used. The eye doctor will also make a differential diagnosis of other eye diseases that may cause visual impairment.

Cataract Treatment

The only treatment option in cataract treatment is surgery. When the cataract reduces visual acuity to a certain level and when the daily life activities of the patients are adversely affected it should be treated inevitably. In cataract surgeries basic logic is the replacement of the distorted lens, which lost its transparency, with a new eye lens. In cataract surgeries, removal of dulled lens can be done by two different methods. The method to be applied in the cataract surgery is decided by the eye doctor according to the patient’s age, eye condition, and lens type to be used.

The first of these methods is the ‘Intracapsular Cataract Extraction’ method in which the damaged lens is removed in one piece with its membrane. This method is an old method and is rarely used today.

In cataract surgeries, the most commonly applied method is PHACO which is to remove a portion of the lens capsule, other parts are cleaned by PHACO method and new lenses can be inserted into the lens membranes. The PHACO method, also known as Extracapsular Cataract Extraction, is the current point in cataract surgery today. The PHACO method is an extremely safe method with advantages such as not making needles, not using stitches, and not applying bandages after surgery. Patients awake during surgery and do not feel any pain. The operations performed by PHACO method takes approximately 10-15 minutes depending on severity of the cataracts.

Calculation of the degree of artificial lenses to be placed into the eye by cataract surgery is done with IOL MASTER System. This system is the latest technological system on this subject. The success of cataract surgeries depends on the experience of the eye doctor, the method used and the quality of the artificial lens. Today, the success rate of cataract surgeries is 95%.

The type and quality of the artificial lens used in cataract surgery directly affects postoperative results. Currently, single focus lenses are more commonly used in cataract surgeries. Patients applied with this type of lens may need to wear glasses or contact lenses to see distant or near after the operation. Patients with multifocal lenses that have recently been on the market are not required to use glasses or contact lenses after surgery.
